High Bridge Trail State Park

great ride

April, 2025 by dmason511

The trail is in great shape going East from FarmVille. Going West from FarmVille needs some attention. It appears that the area had a storm and a lot of trees fell. Heavy equipment used to remove the trees has left ruts in the trail. We rode for about five miles and decided that it wasn’t going to get better, turned around and went back to FarmVille.

We rode two different sections, nice trail. Took the side gravel trail near the bridge to see the underside. At Pamplin, the west end, there’s a small restaurant with excellent burgers, MiPa’s Table. Just past the trails end along the small Main Street.

Bucket List Trail

March, 2025 by mlawlor72

This trail has been on my “bucket list” and I finally got to ride it! Absolutely stunning early spring day for riding - sunshine and warmth. I started the trail at its head point - New Hill Olive which was well marked off the road. Lots of parking. Has a bathroom. The segway portion leading down to the trail is loose gravel and on the steep side - take note - wasn’t easy to bike on and I could see people taking spills here. From here, the trail is packed sand which I find more enjoyable to ride on as there aren’t root humps and bumps. New Hope Church Rd is a beautiful stop with bathrooms and water fountains. From there it turns into mixed use with asphalt and packed sand.

Don’t ride when wet

January, 2025 by terriannjma_tl

This is a very lovely trail with some elevation gain and loss, but very quiet and remote. The key is do not ride this trail if there has been any substantial moisture! We rode this trail when there was snow and ice on the trail as well as melt water and the trail was like riding through quicksand. Very difficult! Maybe during the summertime when it’s dry it would be lovely but not today. Riding on the snow and ice was also treacherous as there were packed down frozen tracks from a truck that uses the path for maintenance and access to surrounding areas.

Well paved- beautifully kept trail. Had a great morning riding into downtown Lynchburg , where we stopped for a nice lunch. I would definitely ride this trail again.

We made a trip from western NC to ride the trail. Riding bikes we are always looking for longer trails and this was worth the trip! Also got to experience and enjoy the Durham area. Hopefully we'll get the opportunity to return sometime soon.

Main path is flat and shaded. A hidden statue is along the way. There are some side trails to extend the walk.

High Bridge Trail State Park

Amazing Trail with History

July, 2024 by hughes29187

The High Bridge trail is a great trail with a truly amazing experience as you traverse the bridge. There are three pull offs on the bridge that allow you to stop and view the wonderful landscape. The trail mileage is based on distance from the bridge both East and West, so for example if you start in Farmville, VA you'll be at West 5 miles. The new visitor center on the East side in the State Park is almost complete and was built to look just like the train station in Farmville. I would image it will house historical items on the rail and Civil War. Also, the trail provides a bonus with a Civil War-era fort (Fort Paradise) with plaques explaining the historical significance. I rode my Trek Cyclocross with 700x32 tires and was fine. Definitely looking to go back in the Fall.

ATT Trail Review

September, 2023 by eeidem

The American Tobacco Trail is an excellent trail for bikers, walkers, runners, and horseback riders. I did a bunch of research via YouTube on the trail before I drove the hour to get to it. It was shaded, easy to find, and the trail surfaces were superb and easy to ride.

There were available bathrooms at the trailhead and in different areas along the trail. It was exceptionally busy with the cooler temps so you need to watch out for oncoming traffic (runners, bikes).

If I had to pick something to improve, I would fix two things to make the trail even better. First, the markings as you get into the outskirts of Durham (from the south). We missed the trail marker and had a slight diversion. The other thing I would do to improve this great trail experience would be putting more garbage cans throughout the trail to throw out any trash and especially for folks cleaning up after their dogs (doggie bags). No one wants to carry that for a few miles.
